Trial events will be run on Friday, May 19. Time slots will be in 1 hour increments – 8:30 am, 9:30 am, 10:30 am, 11:30 am, and 12:30 pm. Teams may register only 1 team of 2 students per trial event. The rules posted on the WSU SO National website will be the rules to follow for the National Tournament. Please note that they may differ from other versions of the rules! Sign-ups for the time slots will be at the same time as the Saturday online signups which starts on Sunday, May 7. Please refer to the Online Sign up information. There will be no impounds, teams are to bring their devices to the competition area during their sign-up time slot.
Trial event awards will be given out during the Saturday awards ceremony.
ROLLER COASTER - Rules - Student Union Atrium
Prior to the competition, teams design, build, and test a roller coaster track to guide a vehicle that uses gravitational potential energy as its sole means of propulsion to travel as close as possible to a target time.
ROTOR EGG DROP - Rules (updated 4/7/17) - Russ Engineering Lobby
A team will construct an unpowered, autorotation helicopter device, which uses one or more helicopter rotor(s) to safely transport a raw chicken egg from a specified height to the floor.
INDOOR BOTTLE ROCKET - Rules - Student Union Gym
Prior to the tournament, teams will construct up to two rockets designed to launch a Ping-Pong ball using air pressure only that stays aloft for greatest amount of time inside a typical gym.
ELECTRIC WRIGHT STUFF - Rules - Student Union Apollo Room
Teams will construct and test up to two electric motor-powered monoplanes with a single propeller assembly to achieve maximum flight times. Energy to the motor is provided by a capacitor.
