Cameos of Caring

Wendy Smith - Good Samaritan Hospital

Good Samaritan Hospital
Recognition Year:
2018

To her patients, Wendy Smith is calm and encouraging. She stands by their side, giving them the strength they need in those difficult moments of labor and birth. But her nursing grace didn’t come automatically. For some, “it just comes with time. Some people were born to be nurses. But some people, learn to be nurses,” she says. “So I think I was one of those: I learned how.” Her colleagues openly admire the nurse that Wendy has become. She is considered a strong and dependable team leader, and an amazing nurse resource. When the floor is busy, she helps keep spirits up and staff motivated by providing reassurance and guidance for prioritizing tasks. She cheerfully keeps a level head, they say, and does all of this with a smile on her face! Wendy says she draws strength from her team in return. “Just knowing that you’re not by yourself is important. That’s one thing I learned early on—that you can be by yourself and be really good, but you can be with several nurses and be great.”
