Grammy award-winning musician and philanthropist John Legend will be the keynote speaker at the Wright State University 2012 Freshman Convocation on Friday, August 24.
Legend has always aspired to make a difference in the life of others and is a public supporter of changing lives through education. In 2007, he launched the Show Me Campaign, an initiative that promotes school reform to break the cycle of poverty and ensure that every child has the opportunity to shine. His other education initiatives include serving on the boards of The Education Equality Project, Teach for America, Stand for Children, and the Harlem Village Academies. Legend also partners with electronic-manufacturer Samsung to support education initiatives with a special focus on the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).
Legend has released three solo albums during the past decade, all reaching #1 on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop charts. His debut album, Get Lifted, earned him eight Grammy nominations and three Grammy Awards.
Most recently, Legend collaborated with the band The Roots on the album Wake Up!, a compilation of music from the '60s and '70s, all with an underlying theme of awareness, engagement, and social consciousness. This album also won three Grammy Awards, one of which was Best R&B Song for Legend's original composition of "Shine."
