Subject: BA, BS Programs in Earth & Environmental Sciences

Dear Prospective Student:

Welcome! Thank you for your interest in the Undergraduate Programs in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences (EES) at Wright State University. We encourage you to browse through our website for details of the undergraduate programs. We offer B.A. and B.S. degrees in the Earth & Environmental Sciences with course options focusing on 'Earth Sciences', 'Environmental Sciences', and 'Earth & Environmental Sciences Education'. A minor in also offered in Earth & Environmental Sciences. Our Environmental Sciences program been accredited since 1977 by the National Environmental Science and Protection Accreditation Council and we are one of selected few universities nationwide with this accreditation.

Our department has grown recently as the former 'Department of Geological Sciences' and the 'Institute of Environmental Quality' merged to form the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences or EES in 2006.  Some of the new initiatives in our department include redesigned Environmental Sciences program curricula, expanded and newly renovated classrooms and teaching laboratories, interdisciplinary courses and field experiences.  Many new courses will be offered in the Earth Sciences (ES) and Earth Sciences (EAR) undergraduate programs beginning fall semester 2012. The department moved into a newly renovated building (Brehm Laboratory) with modern research laboratories and brand-new facilities in 2007. Several new research laboratories have been set-up in 2010 that are located in the M&M Building.

Our faculty are engaged in world class research in a variety of subjects in the earth and environmental sciences. including hydrogeology, biogeochemistry, applied geophysics. geospatial analysis and remote sensing, paleoecology and sedimentary environments, and complexity in earth processes. In recent years, we also created research opportunities for our undergraduate students in the form of internships, research assistanships, and scholarships that can lead to a senior thesis. Wright State University was recently placed at #4 in the nation in research productivity among small universities (i.e., with less than 15 Ph.D. programs). We offer a well-rounded education to our students in both the basic sciences and its practical application.  It has been demonstrated that our students are well positioned for either graduate school or directly entering the work force.

I encourage you to visit our campus to meet our faculty members, and for a personal tour of our facilities. Please call (937.775.2201) or send e-mail Dr. David Schmidt, Admistrative Director of Undergraduate Programs, or Dr. Songlin Cheng (Director of Undergraduate Curriculum and Studies in EES) to arrange a visit to campus. We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

David Dominic, Professor and Interim Chair
