Subject: Graduate Programs in Earth & Environmental Sciences |
Dear Prospective Student:
Thank you for your interests in the Graduate Programs of the Department of
Earth & Environmental Sciences at Wright State University. We encourage
you to browse our website for details of the MS, MST and PhD programs.
We offer financial
support to our students in the form of teaching assistantships
and tuition scholarships. Further, a few research assistantships
are awarded every year on a competitive basis. In addition, strong applicants
are eligible for Research Council Fellowships through the Graduate School office.
Our department has grown recently as the former 'Department of Geological Sciences' and the 'Institute of Environmental Quality' merged to form the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences or EES in 2006. Some of the new initiatives in our department include updated MS program curricula, expanded and newly renovated classrooms and teaching laboratories, new research laboratories, interdisciplinary courses and field experiences. Many new courses will be offered in the graduate programs beginning fall 2012 as WSU transitions from the quarter system to the semester system. The department moved into a newly renovated building (Brehm Laboratory) with modern research laboratories and brand-new facilities in 2007. In Fall 2009, addional teaching and research facilities were added to EES in the newly renovated Oelman Hall.
Further, several new research laboratories have been set-up in 2010, located in the M&M Building.
Our faculty are engaged in research in a variety of subjects in the earth and environmental sciences. including hydrogeology, biogeochemistry, applied geophysics. geospatial analysis and remote sensing, paleoecology and sedimentary environments, and complexity in earth processes. Wright State University was recently placed at #4 in the nation in research productivity among small universities (i.e., with less than 15 Ph.D. programs). We offer a well-rounded education to our students in both the basic sciences and its practical application. An MS degree from WSU will provide an excellent education and solid preparation
whether one decides to begin a professional career or pursue a PhD. Our graduates have the ability to address complex, real-world challenges, since they acquire a strong foundation in the basic sciences and an advanced training in interdisciplinary and emerging fields. The employment opportunities for our graduates continue to be strong, and their record of professional growth is excellent. Several companies visit the campus and recruit from amongst our graduates every year. If you are interested in pursuing an interdisciplinary PhD degree in Earth & Environmental Sciences, please visit the link to the Environmental Science Doctoral Program; also see the research projects of the PhD students in EES department.
Our research
facilities include following state-of-the-art laboratories: Hydrogeology,
Hydrogeochemistry, Aquatic Microbial Biogeochemistry, Environmental Quality & Risk Assessment, Environmental
Geochemistry, Trace Metal Biogeochemistry, Applied Geophysics, and an on-campus
GIS facility and a cross-departmental Environmental Analysis Facility (EAF); these provide our graduates with experience and training in
field data acquisition, modern analytical techniques, sophisticated data
processing, and computer modeling. We also stress the development of
written and oral communications skills. We offer a variety of graduate
courses to ensure an interdisciplinary training in earth and
environmental science subjects, and hands-on and field
experiences during summer months. Our faculty are
engaged in world class research on
a variety of earth & environmental science topics.
In 2010–11, Wright State offered 91 undergraduate degree programs and 76 graduate and professional programs. A suburban research university that offers one of the lowest tuition rates in Ohio, Wright State is home to more than 19,000 undergraduate and graduate students and saw nearly $75 million in research awards in 2009. The school located in Dayton, Ohio, has awarded more than 91,500 degrees. Wright State
University was recently ranked #4 in the nation in research productivity
among small universities (with less than 15 Ph.D. programs).
Recognition of Wright State University's success is increasing every year among the national rankings reports used by families to evaluate and make their college choices.
I encourage you to visit our campus to meet our faculty
members, and for a tour of our laboratory and research facilities.
Please feel free to contact me through phone (937.775.3452) or e-mail if you have any question about
the graduate programs and the admission process. I look forward to talking
with you soon. Please let me know if you like to visit our campus. We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Dr. Abinash Agrawal
