Research

Fracture Analysis

Investigation will concentrate on identifying regional and local systematic and nonsystematic fracture sets and their relative ages in Cambrian through Pennsylvanian rocks in the Allegheny plateau, along the Allegheny structural front and within the Valley and Ridge. This investigation will aid in the determination of systematic and non-systematic fracture domains and their relationship to regional and local structure in all rock types exposed within the Appalachian overthrust belt and Allegheny plateau. Regioonal fracture investigation of exposed rocks in Ohio and Kentucky. Field investigation of fracture surface structures to determine relative fracturing velocities, stress directions and discrete fracture events. Determination of coring-induced and nnatural fractures in oriented core sections.

Geophysics, Tectonics and Structure

Investigation of the gravity, magnetics, and structure of the Rome trough basement feature in West Virginia. Gravity investigations over pronounced magnetic anomalies in southern West Virginia and Kentucky to better delineate the intrabasement mafic bodies suggested as the source of the block-like magnetic anomalies.Detailed geologic mapping, at 7.5 minute scale, in the Valley and Ridge province of West Virginia.Gravity modelling of stacked Lower Paleozoic carbonates in the folded Appalachians. These lower sheet duplexes contain high density limestone and dolomites and show a pronounced gravity signature.
