Honoring Instrumental Individuals at the Second Annual Amigos Latinos Gala

The Second Annual Amigos Latinos Gala is designed to celebrate the accomplishments of the Office of Latino Affairs. We recognize that we could not do any of this by ourselves. At this year's gala, we will be awarding key people that have been incredibly supportive to our mission. We are excited to announce the following awards and their winners:

The Community Awards: “El Amigo Del Pueblo”: given to individuals for their community engagement and for encouraging a strong connection between the Office of Latino affairs and the Latino community. The winners are…

Sister Mary F. Stacy

Sister Mary has worked at St. Mary’s and is the Director of Dayton Hispanic Ministries. She is a strong advocate for the Latino community and has been instrumental to connecting our office to Dayton Latinos.

Major Pedro Juan Munoz y Dr. Maria Elena Jimenez

This power couple has helped our office and Wright State University connect with students in Puerto Rico and students in our local community. They have a strong belief that education can change the world and so they continually encourage students to pursue their dreams by getting a good education.

Joselito Gracia

Joselito started The Academy for STEM and Sports here in Dayton. Growing up, he had a mentor that helped him get off the streets and focus on school. He now pays it forward by showing students the relevance between STEM and athletics.

The Faculty Awards: “El/La Profe”: given to faculty members who have been supportive of the Office of Latino Affairs’ mission and committed to helping students succeed. The winners are…

Damaris Serrano, Ph.D

Being a Panamanian native, Damaris has assisted the Office of Latino Affairs by bringing us partnership with the University of Panama. With her influence, she has created a sustainable bond that is the beginning of many new programs to come.

Labib Rouhana, Ph.D

Labib is the advisor for SACNAS, Society for Advancement for Hispanics/Chicanos and Native Americans in Science, which brings his vision alive to help students interested in math and science fields at Wright State University.

Mike Saville, PH.D. P.E

Mike has been an influential help in starting the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) student chapter at Wright State University. He is always there to advise, support students, and spread the word of SHPE events and meetings.

The Staff Awards: “La Amiga Querida”: given to WSU staff members who continuously show their loyalty and support to our office. These wonderful women have applied their vision in helping benefit the students and the community around them. The winners are…

Iris Mirelez, M.Ed.

Iris has been instrumental in serving the Latino community. Being a part of that very community here at Wright State, from the beginning she has seen the impact our programs have had on students. She has given of her time to provide additional FAFSA workshops to students and in doing so, helping them become future Raiders.

Julia Acosta, M.Ed.

As the advisor for Amigos Latinos Student Association, Julia is always connecting our office with more Latino students. She shows incredible support for all of our office initiatives and the success of the Amigos Latinos Student Association.
