Introduction:

Lisa Arose provided an overview to the group of the Partnership for Success initiative. It was reported that Partnerships for Success is an initiative of the Ohio Family and Children First Cabinet Council, and is a comprehensive approach to building capacity at the County level to prevent and respond effectively to child and adolescent problem behaviors while promoting positive youth development.

Roles:

The group discussed the structure of the Community group. Gloria Wolff was identified as the Community champion for the Xenia Group and Tom Gelhausen as the Greene County Family and Children First Council contact. It was the consensus of the group that Ms. Wolff and Mr. Gelhausen serve as co-chairs with Greta Jones assuming the responsibility for recording the minutes of the meeting. Ms. Wolff and Mr. Gelhuasen will serve on the Coordinating Team for PfS.

Next Meeting:

The committee decided to continue to meet at 12:00 noon at Juvenile Court on the 1st Wednesday of every month. The next meeting date was set for January 8, 2003 because of the holiday season.

Roster:

The attendees discussed the membership of the Xenia group, and said that the individuals who have been invited to attend include a good representation of the community, including faith-based organizations, businesses, schools, and other villages and townships. Tom Gelhausen is going to try to bring a student from the Academy to the next meeting, and Catherine Wolf is going to try to get a student from one of the Xenia Schools to attend.

Greene County Values:

A handout titled Greene County Values as Brainstormed by Partnerships for Success Coordinating Team was passed out. These values, in no particular order, are:

Greene County Values:

  • Education
  • Collaboration
  • Farmland/Greenespace
  • Independence/Sense of Self
  • Faith-based
  • Recreation
  • Health & Healthy Lifestyles
  • Respect for veterans and military culture
  • Children
  • Diversity
  • Work Ethic
  • Social Services
  • Mobility

The group then decided on the three values that most represent the Xenia community:

  • Education and children
  • Diversity
  • Farmland/Greenspace

Target Impact Areas for Xenia:

The committee reviewed the potential targeted impacts listed on page 21 of the Community Planning Guide and decided on the three areas of priority for Xenia.

  1. Increase youth and family involvement in schools and the community.
  2. Reduce delinquency.
  3. Decrease substance abuse.

The discussion centered on the inter-relatedness of the three issues, and that by impacting the first priority (increasing youth and family involvement, delinquency and substance abuse would decrease). Some of the suggestions included increasing the opportunities of parents within the schools, and communicating existing opportunities to the community. For example, youth groups could form a coalition where they share available opportunities with each other.

Next steps:

The first edition of the Greene County Partnerships for Success Needs Assessment Data Book was distributed. Committee members were asked to use the worksheet on page 29 on the planning guide to assist in analyzing the data. If committee members have additional data to share, they should bring that with them to the next meeting. Lisa Arose will contact Dr. Smith at Xenia Schools to see if we can get a copy of a survey on perceptions of students (given during middle school, during high school, and after graduation). Members were also asked to consider how they would like to involve the broader Xenia community in the planning process.
