Survey Research Lab

Services

The center conducts descriptive, exploratory and explanatory research in areas of urban social, physical, political, and economic policy and programs. Techniques include professional survey research, focus group analysis, literature searches and review, and data analysis. CUPA provides a broad range of social, economic, political, and geographical data for the Dayton-Springfield metropolitan area, the state of Ohio, and the United States as a whole. The Center offers workshops, retreats, conferences, and seminars to facilitate the exchange of information, and build consensus to solve problems particularly in the area of public policy issues, serving all sectors of the population. Our capacity encompasses seven staff, seven faculty, and 24 students (graduate and undergraduate) who facilitate community planning sessions, conduct telephone surveys, analyze complex data, and write reports.

Regional Issues

CUPA convenes and facilitates interlocal discussions, assumes a leadership role in addressing problems and provides applied research to enhance our knowledge of the impacts of state and local policies and programs. Examples of our activities include such projects as:

  • CUPA conducted Challenge 95, the seven county strategic planning process that placed Wright State University as a key player in such fields as science and technology.

  • The Economic Development/Government Equity (ED/GE) model for tax revenue sharing designed by CUPA has been held up as a national model for mitigating intraregional competition and for promoting governmental cooperation.

  • Work conducted by the UUP Housing Network (of which CUPA is an active partner) resulted in the revision of the national capital gains tax.

Community

Building CUPA provides outreach, research and technical assistance to neighborhoods, local governments and nonprofit development and service agencies. Examples of our activities include such projects as:

  • CUPA developed the City of Dayton Neighborhood Leadership Institute.

  • The City of Dayton Economic Development Web page and Internet search engine designed by CUPA won an AEDC national award for creativity.

  • CUPA’s partnership with the City of Dayton, the WSU Center for Groundwater Management, and Department of Geology for the Wellfield Business Education program resulted in the National Groundwater Management Award.

Resource Development

CUPA collects, organizes and interprets data and develops the skills of practitioners and citizens. Examples of our research activities include such projects as:

  • The Miami Valley Employment Outlook served as a model for addressing work force development needs from Chicago to Washington D.C.

  • The Machine Technology Directory developed by CUPA along with the Harris Corporation was used to promote Dayton Area companies in the International Expo held in Hanover, Germany.

  • The National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention invited CUPA to present its model for conducting community health needs assessments at the annual CDC conference in Atlanta, Georgia.
