Nine County Health Systems Improvement Project, 1995-2000
|
Local communities are burdened by rising health care costs and limited access to care for underserved populations; and within
this environment, public health officials struggle to ensure access to care, while at the same time developing innovative strategies
for primary prevention of poor health conditions and disease. Nine counties in Southwest Ohio collaborated with Wright State
University’s Center for Urban and Public Affairs and the Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association to create meaningful health systems
change by conducting community health needs assessments and using data and community input to create a data driven strategic health
plan for each county, and for the region as a whole. The health needs assessments, conducted in both 1995 and 2000, created a
regional database of health information providing powerful information for public health officials.

|
Montgomery County Health Needs Assessment, 2001 - 2004 |
|
A common perception is that men are more commonly affected by heart disease than women; however, one in two Miami Valley women
will experience problems stemming from heart disease at some time in their life. Wright State University partnered with area
hospitals and WHIO-TV to investigate the perception of women about heart disease. The Center for Urban and Public Affairs
regularly conducts surveys to measure the impact of a promotional campaign urging women to “Know Your Numbers” and to get their
blood pressure and cholesterol checked.

The Center for Urban and Public Affairs partnered with the Montgomery County Family and
Children First Council and the Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association to track changes in certain key health issues in
Montgomery County. CUPA conducts an annual abbreviated health needs assessment, creating a longitudinal database of health
conditions over time. This database allows Montgomery County public health officials to track health outcomes and evaluate
the effectiveness of programs and interventions.

Evaluation of Early Intervention Service for Children, 2001
|
|
Early Intervention (EI) services provide evaluation and treatment to infants and toddlers from birth through age
three who have or who are at risk for developmental disabilities. The Center for Urban and Public Affairs (CUPA)
at Wright State University (WSU) partnered with the County Collaborative Group (CCG) in Greene County to conduct a
study to recommend strategies to improve the EI system as the agencies and programs transition under Help Me Grow.
These recommendations were shaped by in-depth personal interviews with parents of children who use EI services, a
focus group with members of the CCG, and a geographic analysis of the need for EI services versus those who are
served, using GIS mapping.

Assessing Needs for the Area Agency on Aging, 2001-2002
|
Assessment of Campaign for the AIDS Resource Center of the Miami Valley, 2002-2003 |
|
The Area Agency on Aging (AAA), serves Champaign, Clark, Darke, Greene, Logan, Miami, Montgomery, Preble,
and Shelby Counties. To assist in the development of a strategic plan for the Agency, the Center for Urban and
Public Affairs conducted a random digit dial telephone survey to complete a needs assessment of older adults,
ages 60 and older, in the nine counties. Center staff facilitated the data analysis and the identification of
critical issues to be addressed in the strategic plan.
|
 |
An important part of
conducting media campaigns is evaluating whether or not the target audience is being reached. The Center for Urban
and Public Affairs partnered with AIDS Foundation Miami Valley to conduct two telephone surveys of Montgomery County
residents to assess awareness, changes in opinions and attitudes towards the disease for both those individuals who
have seen the Foundation’s campaign and those who have not. The surveys, conducted before and after the campaign,
provide information to the AIDS Resource Center on the effectiveness of the campaign.

Development of Family Violence Prevention Plan, 2001- 2003
|
|
The Family Violence Prevention Collaborative was created to address violence prevention and intervention services
in a rapidly expanding population in Warren County not supported by a corresponding growth in services.
Wright State University’s Center for Urban and Public Affairs partnered with the Family Violence Prevention
Collaborative to facilitate a community-driven strategic planning process. Through analysis of over 100 secondary
sources, primary data collection, personal interviews and focus groups, the Center facilitated a two-year process
with the Collaborative to develop a community wide plan for Family Violence Prevention.

|
Assessing Need for a Fairborn Hospital, 2003
|
|
In today’s competitive healthcare environment, hospital management must be aware of their target market and their
needs and perceptions, to attract healthcare consumers to use hospital services. The Center for Urban and Public
Affairs partnered with Greene Memorial Hospital to conduct a survey to assess citizen’s perception of health care
needs in Greene County. The survey provided Greene Memorial Hospital with information about the health care needs of
Greene County residents.
|
 |
The City of Fairborn wanted to assess the need for a new medical facility to serve Fairborn residents. The City of
Fairborn, Greene Memorial Hospital, and Kettering Medical Center Network, partnered with Wright State University's
Center for Urban and Public Affairs (CUPA) to conduct a citizen perception survey regarding health care, and the
possibility of a new medical facility, in the City of Fairborn. Findings provided information to the partners that,
overall, the health care needs of Fairborn residents are addressed by existing services.
