Michele Simmons has been employed with the City of Dayton since 1998. Currently she serves as Storm Water Program Manager. Michele is responsible for compliance with the City’s Storm Water Permit which has primary responsibility for monitoring storm water runoff from the over 500 outfalls which drain to the Great Miami, Mad and Stillwater Rivers and Wolf Creek. Michele has been instrumental in the resolution of citizen complaints, emergency response and illicit discharge investigations resulting in the elimination of pollutants to our rivers and aquifer. Michele also assists City Departments for facility compliance with well field protection, storm water and underground storage tank management regulations. She has also been instrumental as a member of the Cool Energy Team in developing the City’ s sustainable practices policy and implementation plan.
Michele has served as a project coordinator for the City of Dayton Children’s Water Festival which hosted 2,400 fourth thru sixth grade students from Green and Montgomery County for a one-day-science workshop at the University of Dayton. As chairperson of a 14 member steering committee, Michele coordinated over 500 community, City and County volunteers to host this City of Dayton supported event.
Michele received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology (Physical Science) from Howard University in Washington, DC in 1988. She was commissioned into the Air Force as an officer and served at the Pentagon for eight months as a computer programmer before being assigned to Wright Patterson Air Force Base in 1989. She served as Hazardous Materials Manager for the Aeronautical System Center/ Wright Laboratory, responsible for inspections and training of over 300 lab personnel on chemical hygiene, waste tracking and minimization. After separation from the Air Force, Michele served a variety of clients as an environmental consultant with CH2M HILL. Her primary responsibilities included environmental auditing, regulatory compliance and groundwater investigation and design of remediation projects.
Michele is currently completing a Masters of Business Administration in Public Administration through the University of Phoenix, Dayton campus. She anticipates completion in February 2009.
