Second Life

The Center for Teaching and Learning has a space in Second Life for faculty who wish to explore the immersive learning potential of a 3D multiuser virtual environment.

Getting to the CTL's "Wright State 2" island in Second Life

Take a jaunt around Second Life with a small group of colleagues to practice basic skills, ask questions, share stories and get better acquainted with the virtual world that educators from some 650 educational institutions in over 40 countries are exploring for immersive learning. Please create your free account and spend at least a couple hours learning the basics before the day of the workshop. See below.

Step 1: Created a Second Life Account

First, sign up for a Second Life account.

You'll choose a beginning avatar that you can customize as much as you want later. You'll also choose a user name and password. Finally, you'll download and install the Second Life Viewer, which is the software you'll use to participate in Second Life.

But don't log into Second Life yet. Go to Step 2 first.

Tip 1: When choosing your avatar, don't miss the links at the top of the page. You may want to click on the "People" link to start with a normal-looking avatar. (But if you prefer to start as a robot or something, that's cool too.)

Tip 2: If you'll want to access Second Life from WSU computer labs, install the viewer onto a flash drive or Skydrive so you can take it with you and won't have to download and install the program repeatedly.

Step 2: Go to Wright State Island

When you have created your account and have installed the viewer, click the following link, which should open the Second Life viewer with it cued up to go to Wright State Island:

Go to Wright State Island

Log into Second Life and your avatar should appear on Wright State Island.

Step 3: Learn the Basics

Once you are in Second Life, look for the "Help" menu at the top of the viewer. Pull it down and choose "Second Life Help" to learn how to move, communicate, customize your avatar, and other basics.
