Hiking/Backpacking

Cumberland Gap Backpacking Trip

Trip Description:This scenic hike will commence at the Harlan Ridge Trail then follow the border of Virginia and Kentucky . We will spend Saturday night at Gibson Gap campsite and continue out hike out past Skylight Cave .  The Cumberland Gap holds historic roots as the first great gateway to the west, where pioneers and Native Americans would follow the buffalo through the mountains into the wilderness of Kentucky.

Dolly Sods Wilderness Backpacking Trip

Trip Description:This strenuous hike through the Dolly Sods Wilderness area offers some of the best backpacking in the east. The adventure begins by following Red Creek past beautiful waterfalls and refreshing swimming holes. After our first full day on trail, we will leave the creek behind and venture into the unique highlands of Dolly Sods. The landscape will transform into one which resembles that of the Canadian tundra.  Participants will experience flat, rocky plains, upland bogs, and sweeping vistas before heading back to the cool water of the Red Creek on this 20-mile loop. We will spend 4-nights on trail before heading back to WSU.

Hocking Hills Day Hike

Trip Description:Enjoy the natural splendor on this 6-mile trek from Old Man’s Cave to Ash Cave. Encounter cliffs, waterfalls, and the beautiful forests that Hocking Hills has to offer. The amazing overlooks on Cantwell Cliffs are sure to take your breath away, and the rugged trails of Old Man’s Cave have been a favorite of hikers around the world. End up at Ash Cave and enjoy the sandy recess and beautiful waterfall there. Stop by the ORC to reserve your spot!

Kayaking

Intro to Lake Kayaking

Program Description: This class will introduce you to the sport of kayaking and the equipment and
outfitting involved in getting started. Participants will learn the basics of kayaking strokes, such as forward, back, sweep and draws.  You will also practice rescue techniques.

Intro to River Kayaking
Dates: Monday, May 7th and Wednesday, May 9th from 5-9pm OR Friday, May 11th from 12:30-4:30pm

Program Description:This class will introduce participants to moving water.  Participants will learn boat maneuverability as we work our way in and out of eddies, learn to ferry and read the river. We will review kayak equipment and safety concerns.  This class is a continuation of the Introduction to Lake Kayaking.

Intro to White Water Kayaking
Dates: Monday, May 14th and Wednesday, May 16th from 5-9pm OR Friday, May 18th from 12:30-4:30pm

Program Description:This course will introduce kayaking equipment and techniques to beginner and intermediate kayakers. On the Mad River, participants will get the chance to get the feel for moving water and will learn safe paddling skills and rescue techniques.

Intermediate Whitewater Kayaking
Dates: Saturday, May 19th 12-5pm

Program Description: Thanks to several low damn removal projects there is  now access to a class II-III whitewater run that is 5.5 miles long and includes some man-made drops and some natural drops through the limestone chutes.  As we head down river we will stop along the way to work on our Eddy Turns, Peel Outs, Ferrying, and Surfing. This trip/class will end at the Springfield Park and Play.

Advanced Whitewater Kayaking Trip
Dates: Saturday, May 25th 9am - Monady, May 28th, 7pm (Memorial Day Weekend)

Program Description: Do think you have the paddling skills to tackle one of Pennsylvania’s premier white-water areas; the Youghiogheny River?  This ACA certified course (Level 4 Whitewater Kayaking) emphasizes safety, enjoyment and skill acquisition for intermediate paddlers. Join the ORC as we hone our kayaking skills, camp, and prepare to become more confident paddlers.

Mad River Kayak Float Trips

Program Description:This is a 3 mile float down the Mad River. We will start with some basic instruction at Eastwood MetroPark before launching the kayaks down river. We will take out and Riverscape MetroPark in the heart of downtown Dayton. If the water level is unsafe for beginners the ORC will cancel the trip and provide a refund.

Climbing

Climbing Trip to New River Gorge

Trip Description:Join the ORC and climbing expert Bill Johnson on an adventure that will take you to new heights!  Within the 63,000 acres of New River Gorge National Recreation Area are over 1,400 established climbing routes.  The “New” has become one of the most popular climbing areas in the country.  The cliffs are made up of a very hard sandstone and range from 30 to 120 feet in height.  The rock is very featured, and an abundance of crack and face routes are available.  This short trip is for all, beginner to advanced! Join us for an amazing weekend.

Introduction to Outdoor Climbing

Trip Description: This class will cover the basic skills new rock climbers need to know to get started outdoors. We will teach necessary knots, belay fundamentals, and climbing techniques. This class will familiarize participants with the resources and routes found at John Bryan State Park along with safety and risk management while climbing. The climbing routes we use will be geared towards beginners.

Anchor Building

Trip Description:Bill Johnson and Barry Brady will teach the fundamentals of anchor building. The anchor is the site of attachment for the climbing system and must be set-up properly to ensure safety. This class will cover site selection, redundancy, and will provide hands on experience on how to properly set-up a top ropes climbing anchor system.

Lead Climbing Clinic

Adopt a Crag

Trip Description: Come out and join the Outdoor Resource Center Staff and Bill Johnson for a day of spring cleaning and maintenance at our local crag. We will pick up trash, cut back overgrowth and paint anchors. We will drop a few ropes for climbing once the work is done.

Introduction to Caving
Location: Pine Hill Cave, Renfro Valley, KY

Prerequisites: Participants must be able to hike/crawl up to 6 miles

Description: Spectacular views await participants in the fountain room and hurricane room of Pine Hill. This cave is a great combination of crawls, open space and includes a waterfall climb. Pine Hill is a wet cave so come prepared to get wet and muddy.

Buckeye Trail Fest

The Buckeye TrailFest offers a long weekend packed full of hikes, workshops, presentations, speakers and social opportunities. Stay for the day or reserve a space for three nights. Hang out with your hiking pals. Make new friends. Mingle with Ohio's most accomplished long-distance hikers. Learn trail building from the best in the state. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Description:Come out for an evening of thoughtful discussion, physical challenge and fun with Women from Wright State. We will spend the evening on the low ropes course overcoming obstacles (metaphoric) that many of us face on a daily basis at school and on the job with little notice. The final debrief of the evening will take place with marshmallows around a campfire.  Come out and “Make new friends and keep the old.” (Quote borrowed from the Girl Scouts...it’s the year of the Girl)

Low Ropes Facilitator Training
Location: WSU Challenge Course

Description: This is the first step to becoming a trained facilitator on the WSU Low Ropes Course.  The WSU Low Ropes Course contains 13 elements built specifically to help groups explore their inner dynamics and help build relationships.  The elements are diverse and vary greatly in the degree of physical and mental involvement required for a group to succeed.  The facilitator's role is crucial on the challenge course.  This weekend training will take you through the course both as a participant and facilitator; you will learn new games, initiatives, and debriefing techniques.  This is an active, hands-on, experiential training.  Whether you are hoping to become employed by the ORC as a Low Ropes Facilitator or are just looking to add leadership to your resume, you have found an incredible opportunity.
