Kayaking

 Introduction to Lake Kayaking
August 19, 2009
5:30-9:00pm
Eastwood Lake MetroPark

Experience the thrill and ease of this popular sport. Learn about safety guidelines, equipment and maneuvering skills. This class teaches basic paddle strokes and self rescue techniques. The class is taught by ORC staff members who are certified kayak instructors by the American Canoe Association. The class takes place at Eastwood Lake MetroPark. Kayaks, paddles, and personal flotation          devices are provided.

Prerequisite: Ages 12 and above. Must be able to go from face down in the water while wearing a personal flotation device to face up without assistance. Complete guidelines for eligibility are available in the ORC.
What to bring: Snacks and water; water shoes, dress for the weather and come prepared to get wet, sun hat/screen. Complete list of what to wear/bring available in the ORC.
Length: 3.5hrs
Fee: $15.00; includes transportation, instruction, and kayak equipment

Introduction to River Kayaking

Experience the thrill and ease of this popular sport. Learn about safety guidelines, equipment and maneuvering skills, learn to read the river and maneuver a kayak down stream. This class teaches basic paddle strokes and self rescue techniques. The class is taught by ORC staff members who are certified kayak instructors by the American Canoe Association. The class takes place on the Mad River. Kayaks, paddles, and personal flotation devices are provided.

Prerequisite: Ages 12 and above. Must be able to go from face down in the water while wearing a personal flotation device to face up without assistance. Complete guidelines for eligibility are available in the ORC. Intro to Lake Kayaking Class preferred but not required.
What to bring: Snacks and water; water shoes, dress for the weather and come prepared to get wet, sun hat/screen. Complete list of what to wear/bring availablein the ORC.

Twin Creek Paddle Trip
August 22, 2009
10:00am-4:00pm
Twin Creek, OH

This gently-sloping stream flows over glacial till and is constantly recharged by cool, clean water from numerous underground pools. Scientists say it’s among the most biologically rich creeks in Ohio, especially for aquatic macro invertebrates. A dozen species of freshwater mussels and 62 species of fish call Twin Creek home. Join us for a relaxing 6 mile float in recreational kayaks down the creek. Lunch will be served on a sandbar and there will be time to cool off in the river during the heat of the day.

Prerequisite: Ages 12 and above. Must be able to go from face down in the water while wearing a personal flotation device to face up without assistance. Complete guidelines for eligibility are available in the ORC. Intro to Lake Kayaking Class preferred but not required.

Caving

Caving
August 8, 2009

Pine Hill, KY

Spectacular views await participants in the fountain room and hurricane room of Pine Hill. This cave is a great combination of crawls, open space and includes a waterfall climb. Pin Hill is a wet cave so come prepared to get wet and muddy. The cave is 50 degrees year round making it a nice retreat on a hot August day.

Prerequisite: Ages 14 and above.  Participant(s) must be able to hike/crawl up to 6 miles over moderate to strenuous terrain.
What to bring: Long under wear (not cotton), boots, old clothing, change of clothes, lunch, snacks, water, knee pads, duct tape, a complete packing list is available in the ORC at registration
Length: 12hrs
Fee: $25.00; includes transportation, guides, some equipment.
Location: Pine Hill, KY
