Dean, School of Professional Psychology at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio

Dr. Larry James, dean of the School of Professional Psychology, will assume a new role at Wright State University as Associate Vice President for Military Affairs, effective Aug. 12.

In this new position, Dr. James will lead Wright State’s continued efforts to support members of the military and their families through its one-stop shop, the Military and Veterans Student Center. As a veteran and former military clinical psychologist with 10 military deployments under his belt, Dr. James knows some of the challenges students face in navigating the federal system of support services, as well as their personal and family needs as they come from the battlefield.

With a Bronze Star and the Defense Superior Service Medal, Dr. James is not only a decorated soldier, but also a renowned psychologist. Board-certified in both clinical psychology and health psychology, he has received numerous awards and honors for his service to the profession and to the extended military community. He has received the American Psychological Association’s Dorothy Booz-Black Award, Timothy Jeffrey Memorial Award, and Military Psychologist of the Year Award, as well as the Society for Military Psychology’s Robert S. Nichols Psychology Award.

In his five years as dean of the School of Professional Psychology, James has led SOPP to increased enrollment and reaccreditation of its Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology program by the American Psychological Association. Also during his tenure as dean, the Ellis Institute at the School of Professional Psychology became nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). Dean James has also been instrumental in leading the way for the development of two international graduate clinical psychology programs; one in India and another in Nigeria.

Dr. James will remain a professor with SOPP and continue clinical psychological practice in treating patients with post-traumatic stress disorder and brain injuries.

Dr. James has brought tremendous energy to campus as dean of SOPP, and his experiences will help Wright State continue to lead the nation in its services for military students. We are proud to continue to serve active-duty and veteran military personnel with this commitment to their future.
