The Women in Science Giving Circle is a philanthropic program in which donors pool their money to create opportunities that help to enhance the educational and professional success of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEMM) disciplines at Wright State University.

Founded in 2006 by College of Science and Mathematics Dean Michele Wheatly, the Women in Science Giving Circle is well on its way to becoming one of the most successful initiatives on campus. In the beginning, the Women in Science Giving Circle targeted support from women who were members of Wright State's senior faculty or administrative staff. College alumnae were invited to join, too. While growing the female base, it was discovered that something exciting was taking shape... male faculty members and administrators expressed interest in joining the Women in Science Giving Circle, too!

By the fall of 2007, the Women in Science Giving Circle had raised enough money for three educational scholarships and two research grants and, for the first time, announced that it was accepting applications. Over 20 applications were received, and the selection process for each award type was conducted by the program's voting members. In January 2008, the first-ever award recipients were announced.

In addition to its founder, the Women in Science Giving Circle is led by Dr. Dawn Wooley, Associate Professor in the Department of Neuroscience, Cell Biology, and Physiology, whose goal is to grow the membership. "Creating more (and larger) scholarships will be instrumental in both attracting and retaining more women in STEMM," says Dr. Wooley.

Today, the Women in Science Giving Circle has over 60 members and is open to friends, alumni, faculty and staff of Wright State University. The current membership includes donors from academia, government, and industry. For more information, contact Dr. Wooley by

Mission—

The mission of the Women in Science Giving Circle is to create funding opportunities, such as scholarships and research grants, that will serve to enhance the educational and professional success of female students and faculty members in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine) disciplines at Wright State University.

Membership

Membership is open to all alumnae, faculty, staff, and friends of Wright State University. Members who make a three-year commitment of $1,000 per year are considered as voting members. Each voting member controls one vote toward decisions that need to be made with respect to program activities, including the selection of scholarship and research grant awards winners. Voting members who contribute $3,000 or more are also recognized as charter members during a special ceremony held each spring.

Benefits of Membership—

The main benefit of being a Women in Science Giving Circle member is knowing how your donation dollars will be used.

You will also have exciting opportunities to meet and network with fellow donors and award recipients at various Women in Science Giving Circle, College of Science and Mathematics, and Wright State University events.
