CHILD'S NEEDS

Identifying a problem

1. By having students examine a bad science project and good science project, they can see that a good science project does not only provide the research and observations, but it has predictions of why the observations happened and why it is important that this happens.

1. Identify the difference between description (e.g., observation and summary) and explanation (e.g., inference, prediction, significance and importance).

Some students will need more guidance on finding coming up with questions of why. Have students work together to share different ways of thinking about a topic.

Collecting and organizing data

2. Students will have to list every type of tool they use in their project in there in the collecting and organizing data stage of the project.

2. Choose the appropriate tools or instruments and use relevant safety procedures to complete scientific investigations.

Give students a sample handout on how to organize one's data. Take a science experiment and show the class how to correctly organize one's data.

Analyzing and interpreting results

3. Have students write a paper on what if I had a smaller or bigger sample size and a different control. Have each student share how their project would change with the class.

3. Describe the concepts of sample size and control and explain how these affect scientific investigations.

Require only a paragraph from students who can not write a whole paper, or have students work together to come to conclusions.
