ADAPTING TO MEET EVERY
CHILD'S NEEDS

Identifying the problem

1. After students have begun their research project have them share how each group will do their project. This will convey the message that every project has a different method of investigation.

1. Explain that there are not fixed procedures for guiding scientific investigations; however, the nature of an investigation determines the procedures needed.

Guide students on where to proceed with their project. Make sure each student knows that every project is different.

2. Request that students list every type of tool they need to use during the data collection and organization stage of their project.

2. Choose the appropriate tools or instruments and use relevant safety procedures to complete scientific investigations.

Give students a sample handout on how to organize one's data. Take a science experiment and show the class how to correctly organize one's data.

3. Give students a brief lesson on how technology is used in society. What kind of technology do you need to use in your project? Do you need a telescope or do you need a refrigerator? Some examples are the refrigerator, television, and video games. What would life be like without these inventions?

3. Explain how technology influences the quality of life.

Have students confer as a group on what technology has done for their lives. What types of technology do you have that your parents did not have?

Stating a hypothesis

4. Have students select several hypotheses for their project, even one that sounds unreasonable. Give them an example of how some scientists stumbled upon their inventions.

4. Identify that hypotheses are valuable even when they are not supported.

Give an example topic. Have students confer in groups with questions on why something happens.
