Scientific Thought and Method - SM 101
SM 101 is an interdisciplinary science course taught by College of Science and Mathematics faculty. The course is taught in an integrated lecture/lab format with class sizes of 24 students. The 4 quarter hour credit course meets in 2.5 hour blocks twice a week.
Course objectives
- Sharpen scientific reasoning and critical thinking skills
- Develop math-based skills necessary for success in the majors
- Explore physical and natural sciences
- Excite students about math and science
- Showcase careers in science and mathematics
The course was designed using the Domain-General Curricular Approach with an emphasis on the process, skills, and mathematics of scientific inquiry in the context of interdisciplinary science topics. The students receive explicit instruction on hypothesis generation, experimental design, evidence evaluation, drawing inferences, and writing evidence-based conclusions. Students are provided substantial opportunities to practice scientific inquiry skills through class activities, projects, and homework assignments.
