Awards and Recognition

The department entered a team of three students in the nationwide Putnam Mathematical Competition and was the only school in Ohio to have three students scoring in the top 500 (out of 3,400 nationwide).

The 2002 International Mathematics Modeling Competition team earned a “meritorious” rating by placing in the top 14% worldwide.

Dr. Susann Mathews was awarded a CoSM 2001-2002 Outstanding Teaching Award.

Dr. Ann Farrell was chosen by Governor Taft to serve on the recent Governor’s Commission on Teaching Success, the only professional-rank, non-administrative, faculty member from higher education so chosen in the state.

Outreach

Dr. Ann Farrell is chair for the Ohio Distributed Learning Workshop Team, which reviews and summarizes statistics education literature for the Ohio Department of Education’s internet resource. Dr. Farrell was also a consultant for Oakwood City Schools to conduct a research study of their integrated mathematics program.

Dr. Susann Mathews was the site supervisor for the OCTM Mathematics Contest. This contest is held annually throughout Ohio. She was also a mathematics consultant for engaging Math & Technology with the Upper Miami Valley Tech Prep Consortium for regional secondary math teachers.

Dr. Michelle Reed was a member of the Board of Trustees and a Mathematics Consultant for St. Joseph Montessori School in Columbus, Ohio.

Dr. Thomas Svobodny was a BSA merit badge coordinator in the areas of energy, atomic energy and weather.

Dr. Dan Voss served on the board of directors for Honor Seminars of Metropolitan Dayton, Inc.

Statistical Consulting Center:

The Statistical Consulting Center (SCC) has been a statistical resource for both on- and off-campus researchers since 1982. The SCC worked with 123 clients and 8% of its effort was devoted to external clients. Miami Valley Health Improvement Council, Cardiology South, and Hayden Safety Engineers are some of the external clients with whom the SCC worked. Both on- and off-campus clients were provided with consulting services including but not limited to research design, data entry/management, database construction, data analysis, and interpretation of statistical results. Seminars and short courses were offered to WSU Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. students, WSU College of Nursing and Health masters degree students, and Cardiology South personnel.
