Outreach

Dr. Cindy Carney is coordinating a group of twelve scientists working with the Fairborn Parks and Recreation Advisory Board to develop an old limestone quarry near Fairborn into an educational and research park. She currently has two graduate students and one undergraduate doing research on various aspects of the quarry.

Dr. Roderic Brame made presentations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Take Your Daughters to Work Day.

Dr. Ernest Hauser continued his geophysical work at Sunwatch Village to map areas yet to be excavated.

Dr. Robert Ritzi was a presenter at the Dayton Children’s Ground Water Festival. He also served on the City of Dayton Environmental Advisory Board (chairing the Water Subcommittee), and on the Ohio Geology Advisory Board.

Dr. William Slattery was invited to present at the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco on the topic of Earth System Science in K-12 classrooms. He also participated in a professional development program for 24 teachers that included a field trip to Virginia, West Virginia, and New Jersey. The teachers then came back to Wright State for a week long laboratory session. The follow-up internet course resulted in 500 Miami Valley School children learning about earth and space science in an innovative way. Dr. Slattery also hosted the visit of a Science Education Professor from Azerbaijani who was interested in learning about Wright State’s Earth Systems science courses for pre-service and in-service teachers.

Dr. Doyle Watts was invited to attend the dedication of the remote sensing lab at Central State University attended by Congressman David Hobson. He was also the co-director of the graduate student research SOARS program at NASA Glenn. In addition, Dr. Watts accepted the position of Honorary Research Fellow at the Open University in the United Kingdom.

Student Clubs and Activities

The WSU student chapter of the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) hosted a dinner and meeting of the State AIPG, giving them the opportunity to interact with professional geologists from all over Ohio.

The Sigma Gamma Epsilon (SGE) Earth Science Honorary conducted a field trip to the Cincinnati Natural History Museum.

Together, the student chapters of AIPG and SGE adopted a highway (entrance/exit to Rt. 844 near Wright State) for clean-up, they organized and hosted the annual departmental dinner, and tutored four groups of Science Olympiad students (2 of 4 went on to state competition). In addition, AIPG and SGE organized activities associated with Earth Science Week and sent students into local classrooms to teach students about Geology.
