Faculty Highlights

Dr. Larry Arlian served as an advisor to the FDA on approval of new allergy drugs.

Dr. Scott Baird was the founding organizer of the Dayton Evolution Group.

Dr. Allen Burton was the program chair for the 5th International Symposium on Sediment Quality Assessment held in Chicago, Illinois in October, 2002.

Dr. Wayne Carmichael was a member of the National Organizing Committee for the 10th International Conference on Harmful Algae in St. Petersburg, Florida on October 21-25, 2002.

Dr. David Goldstein and Dean Wheatly hosted visiting students from Brazil as part of an exchange program funded by Ohio Department of Education.

Dr. Phyllis Pacifico added several clinical internship sites and admitted a record number of students to the Clinical Laboratory Science program.

Dr. Roberta Pohlman and Dr. Larry Isaacs initiated a series of graduate assistantships in Exercise Physiology with Miami Valley Hospital.

Dr. Thomas Van't Hof visited several laboratories in Japan as part of a continuing collaboration with colleagues in that country.

Dr. Tim Wood traveled to Korea, Thailand, and Laos to explore the biology of tropical bryozoans.

Outreach

Dr. Jim Amon worked with Miami Valley School on their volunteer days in April and May, 2002, having their students help in wetland management and restoration. A similar experience was made with Carroll High School Ecology Club, the students of John Silvius and Cedarville University, and Beavercreek High School. He also writes nature articles and acts as Editor-in-Chief for Spotted Turtle, a publication of the Beavercreek Wetlands Association.

Several faculty went into local schools to give lectures on DNA, the Galapagos and other biological principles.

Dr. Larry Arlian did an all day exercise on indoor bugs (dust mites and allergies) as part of the Smithsonian’s Traveling Insect Classroom teaching program for grade school children. The program was at Wagaman Technology Magnet School in Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Arlian also participated with a group of 4th graders from Fairborn at the 2002 Children’s Water Festival. This program was held at the University of Dayton, was for 4th and 5th graders, and consisted of an all day series of classroom/lab sessions dealing with various aspects of water (e.g. water and life, water cycle, aquifers, water quality, properties of water etc).

Student Clubs and Activities

Biology Club: Activities include “academic” meetings (e.g., presentations from faculty and others on various topics, such as department research, bioinformatics, or forensic biotechnology), service activities (e.g. promoting recycling, maintaining trails), and “exploration” (e.g. trips to local and out of town destinations like Missouri Botanical Gardens, Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, Cincinnati Zoo, etc.).

Publications and Book Chapters

Refereed publications and book chapters published in 2002 only (do not include in press, submitted, abstracts or conference proceedings), listed alphabetically by faculty member.
