CoSM Special Events

Science Fair Judges: Over 50 CoSM faculty, staff and students contributed a Saturday in March, 2003, to act as judges at the Miami Valley Science and Engineering Fair (formerly the West District Science Fair). WSU also contributed eight special awards to worthy science projects.

First American Woman in Space visits WSU: Dr. Sally Ride brought her Sally Ride Science Festival to WSU in October, 2002, and more than 700 5th-8th grade girls attended the day long event. The festival is a component of the Sally Ride Science Club™ which aims to make science, math, and technology accessible and fun for girls with natural curiosity.

Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work: Dean Wheatly was the opening speaker for this university-wide event held on April 24, 2003. Over 150 children came to work with a parent or mentor for the day. CoSM faculty generously held special sessions for the visitors in Life Sciences, Physics, Chemistry, and Statistics.

Quest Conference: WSU held the conference "Quest for Community: A Call to Action" on May 9, 2003; it was a forum to discuss efforts to create inclusive educational environments, programs and curriculum; improve campus racial and ethnic relations; and expand opportunities for educational access and success. Dean Wheatly spoke about the C.L.A.S.S. project and Dr. David Goldstein, Dean Wheatly, and Ndate Fall presented a talk titled, “Strategies for Improving Success of Minority Students in the Life Sciences.”

American Chemical Society President Visits WSU: WSU had the honor of hosting Dr. Elsa Reichmanis, the President of the American Chemical Society, on April 15, 2003. Dr. Reichmanis spoke to a large group of faculty and students about opportunities available in the field of chemistry.

Miami Valley Tech Fest: CoSM faculty and staff interacted with over 900 visitors at this three-day science festival. Interactive displays and activities showed students, parents and teachers from around the state the educational possibilities at WSU.

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology: WSU sponsored the 12th International Symposium on Aviation Psychology, which was held at the Convention Center in Dayton, April 14-17, 2003. Dr. Tom Crouch, the senior curator of aeronautics at the National Air and space Museum, Smithsonian Institute and one of the most highly respected historians on the Wright Brothers, gave the opening address to a group of researchers and scientists representing 24 different countries from all corners of the globe.

CoSM Relationship-Building and Development

Environmental Sciences: A Symposium on Ecosystem Stressors was held May 15, 2003 to celebrate the new Environmental Sciences Ph.D. Program. The symposium included presentations by faculty and students, a keynote address by Bill Adams of Rio Tinto, Inc., and a member of the U.S. EPA Science Advisory Board, and a reception.

YSI Endowed Scholarship in Environmental Sciences: The generous employees of YSI, Incorporated announced a three-year $150,000 pledge to support scholarships in the CoSM’s Environmental Sciences Program and the YSI Endowed Scholarship in Environmental Sciences that will exist in perpetuity. Susan Miller, YSI Foundation trustee, commented, “Because of our strong interest in the environment, we are very pleased to support the quality educational efforts of Wright State’s new Environmental Sciences Ph.D. Program. This is a great fit.” The donation represents one of the largest contributions from the Foundation.

Campus Scholarship and Innovation Campaign: A picnic was held in early May to thank faculty and staff that had contributed to this annual scholarship campaign. Students that had received support from past CSIC donations were also invited to participate in the picnic. The college faculty and staff increased participation by 52% this year with 73 contributing to the campaign. Overall, 29% of the CoSM community contributed to the campaign.

Alumni Lunches: In an effort to build connections to the alumni, Dean Wheatly initiated periodic lunches with groups of local graduates from each department within the college. Alumni were invited to come back to campus for a brief tour, a lunch and an opportunity to reconnect with faculty, friends, and the university community. Chemistry and Physics had successful events this year.
