Bio

Dr. Shalin currently advises graduate students in the Human Factors/Industrial Organizational psychology graduate program.

 

Research Interests

Dr. Shalin's research interests are human workplace expertise and associated empirical and analytic methods to support the design and testing of workplace aiding and training technology. She studies cognition in workplace settings, incorporating both experimental methods from behavioral science and observational methods from social science.

In one facet of her work, she examines the knowledge-based functions of human experts, focusing on problem detection and ownership, and the role of domain purpose in reasoning and problem solving. In the second, complementary facet of her work, Dr. Shalin examines technology and training as a means to support and develop workplace experts. Recent and/or on-going studies address: expertise in computer repair technicians, decision support for problem formulation in sales and display design for commercial aviation.
