Capabilities
Laboratories
The Environmental Analytical Facility has three laboratories available for use. There are two instrumentation laboratories containing the instruments available for useage. The general instrumentation laboratory houses most of the EAF instruments. The second instrumentation laboratory contains a Scintillation counter in a secure area. Another laboratory is suitable for preparing instrument standards on a small scale.
Instrument Capabilities
Atomic Absorption (AA) Spectrometer
Equipped to analyze elements in either Atomic Absorption or Atomic Emission Mode. Analysis of liquid samples
Centrifuge
Equipped with a fixed rotor that can hold 6 x 500mL bottles up to 10,000 rpm. Also has available a swinging bucket rotor that can handle 4 x 500mL tubes, 24 microplates, 8 deep–well plates or 4 square-well plates and operate up to 5,300 rpm. The unit has temperature Control of –10°C to 40°C in 1°C increments.
Gas Chromatograph (GC)–Flame Ionization Detector(FID)
Equipped to analyze volatile or semi-volatile organic compounds in an organic solvent.
Gas Chromatograph–Mass Spectrometer (GC–MS)
The system uses electron impact (EI) ionization and is capable of performing full mass scans or selective ion monitoring (SIM) of volatile or semi-volatile organic compounds in a organic solvent.
Ion Chromatograph (IC)
Equipped to analyze either anions or cations in solution.
Liquid Chromatograph–Mass Spectrometer (LC–MS)
Liquid Scintillation Analyzer
A bench top liquid scintillation analyzer for detecting small amounts of alpha, beta and gamma radioactivity for research and environmental monitoring.
Surface Area and Porosity Measurement System
Equipped to analyze three different matrix samples simultaneously to obtain information about the surface area and porosity of a solid material
Total Organic Carbon (TOC) Analyzer
Equipped to measure TOC, TC, IC, POC, and NPOC in liquid samples. TN, TN with TC, TN with TOC, TN with TC–IC, in liquid samples, Also, with the use of a boat sampling module to measure TC in solid and liquid samples.
