Where are the files I know I saved?

There are three drives you could have saved your file to:

  • C: - the hard drive in your computer

  • H: - your private segment of the network server

  • K: - your department's segment of the network sever

(For more details on what drives you have and who else has access to them, go to Drives & Files on the FAQ page.)

To find a file you know you saved:

If the file you are looking for was recently saved:

  1. Open the application in which you last opened the file.

  2. Go to FILE

  3. SAVE AS

This will show you where you last saved a file in that application.

Another way to look for the file is to:

  1. Open the application in which you last opened the file.

  2. Go to FILE

  3. At the bottom of the drop down menu is a list of the files most recently used in the application.

  4. If the file you are looking for is listed, double click on the name and it will open.

  5. Check the file path (all of the letters in front of the file name) so you know where the file is located.

If this doesn't work, a more complex method follows:

  1. You must know part of the file name or a piece of text in the file that would be unique to the file.

  2. Go to START

  3. FIND

  4. FILES OR FOLDERS

  5. The window below is the "Find" window.Image of find window

  6. Enter the name of the file or any part you know in the "Name" box; if you know a piece of text, enter it in the "Containing text" box.  One or both of these boxes must contain information.

  7. The "Look in" box is a drop down menu; choose either the C:, the H: or K: drive.

  8. If you don't find the file in the first drive you look in, continue to choose drives until you find the file you are looking for.

  9. Each time you search
a box will appear where the file name will appear if the file or files are found.  Again, make sure you remember the file path for the file so you can find it again next time.

If neither method works, you will have to call the CaTS Help Desk at ext. 4827.  Although, be prepared: there isn't much else to be done short of searching through every folder yourself.
