Department of History
Faculty in History have recently published three noteworthy books. Carol Engelhardt Herringer’s Victorians and the Virgin Mary is on the University of Manchester Press. It addresses religious imagery and meaning in the contact of Victorian society and gender roles. Jonathan Winkler’s Nexus, on Harvard University Press, looks at communications and technological change in the context of the First World War. Paul D. Lockhart’s The Drillmaster of Valley Forge is an accessible biography of Baron de Steuben, American revolutionary hero.
The History Department welcomed Sear Pollock in the 2008-09 academic year. Sean researches and teaches on Imperial and Soviet Russia, as well as on various central Asian post-Soviet States. In Fall 2009, the department welcomes Opolot Okia, an Africanist who is winding down two years of Fulbright research in Kenya.
