DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH

The Department of English has co-sponsored an Ambassador Program course traveling to Costa Rica for some years now. To that, the department is adding an Ambassador Program course in Ireland during Summer 2007, and hopes to offer similar opportunities for study in Ireland and England in future years.

In addition, English department faculty are building on the university’s cooperative agreement with Daejong University in South Korea to offer teaching and study opportunities to Wright State students in that city. Other English department faculty are exploring similar future agreements and opportunities with Vietnam.

For eighteen years, the Institute on Writing and Teaching has been equipping K-12 language arts teachers with innovative and effective teaching strategies for helping students improve as readers and writers. The Institute will again host teachers on campus this summer. Courses will cover writing pedagogy and assessment.

English department faculty in courses as diverse as Business Writing, Great Books, and English as a Second Language have used service learning as a successful tool. Business writing students have written proposals and documentation for regional nonprofit organizations. Students in a literature course have helped senior center residents write memoirs and stories about their lives, and international students studying academic English have discovered some of the diversity of American culture by working in soup kitchens and homeless shelters.

Students in Catherine Crowley's L3 Writing and English 111 classes wrote a book, Keep It Real! Language Detectives: Observations and Investigation, during Fall 2006 which is now being used in other English classes at WSU, at a community college in Arizona and at two high schools in Thailand. Students in the level-three intensive English class researched and described features of American culture and language that they were curious about and did not understand.
