4.1 The Major

Major program requirements are completely under the control of the department. If students wish to make substitutions for major requirements, you should seek guidance from the department chair or curriculum committee.

4.2 How to Read a Transcript

4.2.1 Symbols on Transcripts

(See Appendix D: sample transcript illustrating symbols below.)

Grade Symbols:

W - Withdraw: student dropped the course
I - Incomplete: student receives no credit until course is completed and a grade change is posted—becomes an F automatically after following quarter if no action is taken
N - No grade: no grade was reported—must be removed before graduation
X - Failure: student did not complete the course
F - Failure: student did not pass requirements
-- - Failure: student did not pass “lab” or writing intensive portion of a Writing Intensive course

Repeat Symbols:

S - Course taken in a prior quarter; both grades averaged in G.P.A.
Y - Course retaken in a later quarter; both grades averaged in G.P.A.
X - Course retaken in a later quarter; course grade not used in calculating G.P.A.
R - Course taken in a prior quarter; new grade replaces the prior grade in calculating G.P.A.
N - Course credit not added to hours earned; course grade not used in calculating G.P.A. Student may have already taken course with a grade of C or higher or may have successfully petitioned to have the points removed from the record.
