Graduation Advising Reminders - Pitfalls to Avoid
- Developmental Education courses (formerly known as Study Skills) e.g., DEV 073, DEV 081, DEV 093, etc., do not count toward graduation. NOTE: DARS automatically excludes DEV hours from the 192 total count.
- Students in B.A. and B.S. programs are only allowed 68 hours in the major; taking more increases the graduation requirement and will not be counted by DARS toward the total 192 count.
- Transfer hours from community colleges often cause students to fall short of the 300/400 level course requirement (minimum 60 credit hours); however, any lower-level transfer course we equate to an upper-level course at WSU may now count toward upper-level hours.
- Double degrees required 45 hours beyond the minimum required for the first degree (e.g. a double major in Liberal Arts must have 192+45=237 minimum hours to earn both degrees), and students must fill out two graduation applications. Dual majors do not require an additional 45 hours and award only one bachelors degree.
- All N, M, S, and I designations are temporary grades and must be changed to permanent grades (A, B, C, D, F, X, P or U). Students cannot graduate with any temporary grades on their records—including WI grades that have not been reported.
- MTH 145 does not remove the high school math deficiency; the requirement is MTH 126 or 127.
- When students change majors, the writing intensive courses in the old major do not always count toward the writing intensive requirement in the new major.
- Students who receive a D in a course, retake it and fail it, lose credit for the class and have to take it a third time if it is a required course.
- Student must apply or reapply for graduation on time by submitting a Degree Application and Advisor Authorization Form (often called a coupon) to the Bursars with the fee. (Students do not pay the fee a second time for a follow-up application.)
- Students must maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative g.p.a.
- American Sign Language (RHB/ASL) requires 6 quarters versus 5 quarters of any other language to fulfill the foreign language requirement.
- Taking science courses that are not approved for General Education—CHM 101 DOES NOT FULFILL THE GE SCIENCE REQUIREMENT.
