Liberal Arts Advising
PART 2: THE CHECKSHEET, 2.5

2.6 Foreign Language and Research Methods

Students in B.A. programs must complete one foreign language through the 202 (230 for American Sign Language—RHB) level and the courses in Research Methods.

Students who graduated from high school in or before June 1986 will need to complete one foreign language through the 103 level (including RHB) and the courses in Research Methods.

Students in B.S., B.F.A., and B.M. programs will not be required to complete either a foreign language or Research Methods.

The L.A. Advising Office will determine each student’s requirement and indicate it on the checksheet.

2.6.1 Foreign Language

To complete the foreign language requirement, students must demonstrate proficiency at the 202/230 level. Normally, students meet this requirement by taking one to five/six courses, depending on their preparation in the language of their choice.

For those students who are uncertain about their foreign language skills, a placement test may be scheduled through the Department of Modern Languages.

For students who feel confident that they currently have proficiency at the 202 level, a proficiency exam may be scheduled through the Department of Modern Languages. This exam may only be taken once. A proficiency system for American Sign Language is not yet available at Wright State University.

Students who meet the requirement by taking the 202 course or any 300 level course do not receive credit toward graduation for the lower level courses they did not take; however, students who place into and attain a grade of C or better in language classes above 101 or 111 are allowed to buy ungraded credits for sequence courses below that level at a rate of $25 per credit hour. For example, sudents who get a C in 201 can buy credits for 101, 102, and 103; students who get a C in 112 can buy credits for 111.

Students for whom English is their second language may demonstrate proficiency in English for their foreign language in one of two ways. They may successfully complete an upper level English literature course approved by the L.A. Advising Office or successfully complete a proficiency exam offered in the Department of English Language and Literatures.

2.6.2 Research Methods

Students must complete three courses in the Research Methods: one each from the approved lists in computer science, statistics/quantitative methods, and philosophy.

Some major programs require a particular selection. Please advise your students accordingly.

2.7 Senior Checksheets

Students who have achieved senior status (135 hours or more) are sent a letter from the College of Liberal Arts congratulating them on this accomplishment. This letter gives them basic information about upcoming deadlines for graduation application, directs them to seek advising from their faculty advisors, and either includes an updated College of Liberal Arts checksheet, or directs them to consult their DARS report (see Part 3).

In addition, a Senior Response Form may be included with this letter. Students are to complete this form, indicating which requirements they have already met, which are currently in progress, and what they must do to complete any that remain unfinished. This form should be returned by the student to the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s office (163 Millett) within 30 days.

Advisors should schedule a meeting with each senior advisee after receiving the yellow copy of the senior checksheet, or if the student has questions about his/her DARS audit. If there are special problems, advisors should encourage the student to make an appointment with the Assistant Dean or College Advisor.
