Most students will have completed part, if not all, of the
General Education requirements when they are admitted to a major program.
Their progress will be noted in the G.E. section of the L.A. checksheet
(see above). Completed G.E. courses are circled or filled in on the left.
When an entire Area is completed, the “YES” for that Area
will be circled on the far right.
Checksheet illustration is linked at left.
2.3.1 Transfer Credit to Meet General Education
Requirements
General Education requirements are university requirements.
In order to maintain campus-wide consistency in the G.E. program, individual
departmental advisors must not approve transfer courses for G.E. credit.
Only the L.A. Advising Office can approve transfer credit
for General Education purposes. If a
transfer course has been accepted as meeting a G.E. requirement, it
will be so noted on the checksheet. If students have questions about
the use of transfer credit for G.E. requirements, they should be referred
to the L.A. Advising Office.
NOTE: The following requirements
only apply to NEW students beginning at the university Fall 2003 or
thereafter. For Continuing, Returning, and Transfer student requirements,
please see section 2.4.
2.3.2 Area One: Communication
and Mathematical Skills—12 Hours
Communication Skills: ENG 101 and ENG 102
Usually, two freshman writing courses from another college or university
will meet the English requirement. Unusual cases should be referred
to the L.A. Advising Office.
Mathematical Skills: MTH 145
This is a unique course. The only allowed substitutions include: MTH
143, MTH 228, MTH 229 and 230, STT 264 and 265, or STT 160.
2.3.3 Area Two: Cultural-Social
Foundations—8 Hours Minimum
Students should select one course from each category.
Students seeking transfer credit to meet this requirement will need
to provide course descriptions for appropriate courses to the L.A. Advising
Office for review.

2.3.4 Area Three: Human
Behavior—8 Hours Minimum
Students should select two courses from different categories.
Students seeking transfer credit to meet this requirement will need
to provide course descriptions for appropriate courses to the L.A. Advising
Office for review.
2.3.5 Area Four: Human
Expression—4 Hours Minimum
Students should select one course. Students seeking
transfer credit to meet this requirement will need to provide course
descriptions for appropriate courses to the L.A. Advising Office for
review.
2.3.6 Additional Courses
from Areas Two, Three, and Four—8 Hours
Students should select two additional courses
from Areas Two, Three, or Four, each from a different Area.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Except for Area Two, the course selected
must come from a different category than the course(s) chosen to meet
the area requirement.

2.3.7 Area Five: Natural
Sciences—12 Hours
Students should select three courses (or lecture
and lab sets); at least one must be writing intensive. Any
combination of laboratory science courses totaling 12 credit hours can
fulfill this requirement. Most GE science courses consist of a combination
of lecture and lab in one, four credit hour course; however, students
need to make sure they register for and complete both the lecture and
laboratory sections of GE Physics courses for them
to count. Only complete “sets” of Physics
will fulfill the requirement.
2.3.8 Area Six: The College
Component—4 Hours
Students should select one course from the list
of College of Liberal Arts approved courses (see Appendix
B). Some programs within the College of Liberal Arts require a specific
course for this Area.
Students transferring into the College of Liberal Arts
from another College at Wright State must complete a College of Liberal
Arts approved College Component course.
2.3.9 Dual Listed Courses
A course listed in two Areas may only be used to meet
one Area requirement.
