A Complete Program Sequence
- Applications may be submitted throughout the year. Applicants send completed Application for Admission to the Graduate School. The application should include a 250-word essay explaining 1) why you want to pursue a graduate degree, 2) why you want to pursue an interdisciplinary master's degree, 3) why you want to pursue a graduate degree in the Humanities and 4) what you expect your chosen area of study will be.
- The Graduate School forwards the application to the Humanities Program Director for consideration.
- The Director reviews the application and approves the applications which meet admission requirements or makes recommendations to the Humanities Program Committee for students who do not meet the requirements. The Director may grant Provisional admission pending a decision by the Humanities Program Committee.
- Application recommendation is forwarded to the Graduate School and the student.
- Although admission may be granted throughout the year, students should begin taking the core seminars, HUM 700,710,720, at the earliest opportunity. HUM 700 is offered only in the Fall, HUM 710, only in the Winter, and HUM 720, only in the Spring.
- After completing HUM 720, or completing 12 credit hours (whichever comes first) students design a preliminary Program of Study in consultation with the Director.
- A quarter prior to completing course work, the student submits the final Program of Study to the Director.
- The Director approves the Program of Study and sends a copy to the student and the Graduate School.
- In consultation with the Director, students select a faculty member to serve as their Project Director.
- In consultation with the Project Director, students select two (2) other faculty members to serve on their Project Committee.
- A quarter prior to commencing work on the Project, students prepare a prospectus in consultation with their Project Director and Project Committee.
- The completed prospectus is approved and signed by the Project Director and Project Committee members.
- The prospectus is submitted to the Humanities Program Committee. The student and Project Director meet with the Committee for a discussion of the prospectus.
- The Humanities Program Committee (1) Accepts the Prospectus as written, (2) requires modifications or (3) rejects the Prospectus.
- Upon approval of the Prospectus, the student commences work on the Project.
- The Project is submitted to the Project Committee members for final approval. It is the student's responsibility to obtain approval signatures and to be sure the Project conforms to Graduate School requirements.
- An oral defense must be completed during the quarter in which the student graduates.
- After the Project is defended, the Director signs the approval sheet.
