Conferences, Colloquia, and Gatherings
Guest lecturers for the exhibit Spirits Rising - Heritage and Contemporaneity in Figurative African-American Art will speak on their areas of expertise:
Valerie Maynard, sculptor and printmaker, whose work will be exhibitedin the show, will talk Sunday, February 23, 1997 at 4 pm. Reception to follow, 5:30-7 pm.
Lois Mailou Jones, an early 20th Century American expatriate who lived in Paris, will speak on Sunday, March 2, 1997 at 4 pm. Reception to follow, 5:30-7 pm.

Ohio Classical Conference - Everyday Life in the Ancient World. October, 1997, at The Holiday Inn across from WSU.
Pedagogy and current criticism in the Classics is usually stressed at these conferences.

Visiting Writers at WSU -
Gerald Stern, a nationally prominent poet, will speak about his art on Wednesday, March 5, at 2 pm.
Jonson Chue will speak about being a poet with a disability. Date, time, and place have yet to be decided.
Michael J Rosen, a children's book author and nationally prominent poet, will talk about his poetry in the Spring. Date, time, and place have yet to be decided.

Information and Technology in the Classroom -
This conference will be held by the WSU English Department during the week of February 23, 1997. Talks and discussions will concern information on newsgroups, paper-free classrooms, and on-line classroom communication.
College Conference on Composition and Communication -
The WSU English Department faculty who will participate in this conference (which will be held off campus) will hold a colloquium at WSU the week of April 27, 1997. This gathering will be defined by the papers given at the conference.

University of Cincinnati Graduate Conference on Literature and Culture- Why The Big Suit?: The Fabric(ation) of History. Saturday, April 19, 1997.
The theme of this conference examines the reality, myth, and construction of history in literature, the visual arts, and popular culture. Weave your ideas among: autobiographies/fictional lives; power and the construction of history; mad-libbed history; marginalized history or history of the margin; political agendas; revisions/ re-visions; the myth of the frontier; and war & film.

History -
Holocaust Remembrance Week, 1997 will be held at Sinclair Community College the week of April 24, 1997.
Keynote Speaker will be Raphael Ezekiel on "Neo Nazis," at 7:30 pm. at Blair Hall, Building 2 on April 24.
Other events include an art exhibit by Sandy-Jo Gordon, an exhibit honoring rescuers, a one-woman play by Judith Sloan, and various showings of "Faces," personal interviews with survivors.

Due to Dr. Mazey's sabbatical where she'll head up HUDD's Office of University Partnerships for the next year, three new faces will be lending their expertise to the department:
Charles Jones, former Deputy City Manager of Dayton
Judy Mott, Director of the Arts and Cultural District, as well as Director of Community Development
Dave Humphries, Economic and Planning Director of West Carrollton
