WSU is currently developing a Women's Studies program. The programwill exist as an autonomous department later this year, but until then beon the lookout for incremental additions. In its first phase the programwill offer a minor to undergraduates, and then eventually a graduate degreein Women's Studies.
The Director of the program is Dr. Anne Sisson Runyan who comesto WSU from SUNY at Potsdam. Her focus is gender and international relations,and likewise the program will concern the international aspect of gender.It will also provide both the curricular structures and the social awarenessto incorporate issues relevant to women in all disciplines at WSU, as wellas evaluate the educational process and content that has historically excludedwomen.
The first graduate level course offered by the program, FeministPolitical Theory/PLS 605, will be taught in the Spring by Dr. Anne SissonRunyan. She welcomes all graduate students who are interested. On November 15, 1996, the Conference on Women's Studies/GenderIssues in Higher Education will be at the WSU Student Union. The topicis Feminism, Multiculturalism, Globalization and the Academy. Keynote Speakeris Chandra Talpade Mohanty, author and Associate Professor of Women's Studiesat Hamilton College.
