FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND RESEARCH METHODS

All students accepted into the Social Work major must arrange an initial College of Liberal Arts (COLA) advising appointment with Mr. Robert Wood, 163 Millet, 775-2601. At that time a COLA checklist will be completed. This checklist is the official checklist used by the Social Work faculty to determine the COLA requirements that apply to you.

A College of Liberal Arts requirement is to take courses in a modern foreign language up to the 202 level, which often is five courses. You may choose to complete a six course sequence in American Sign Language in lieu of the traditional foreign language.

Students who first enrolled at Wright State prior to Fall 1993 have the option to complete a language up to 202 OR complete the Research Methods option which consists of two (2) approved Logic courses taught in the Philosophy Department, two (2) approved Statistics courses, and two (2) approved Computer Science courses.

Students enrolled at Wright State beginning Fall 1993 and after and who graduated from high school in 1986 or before (prior to the College preparatory curriculum policy requiring two units of foreign language), must demonstrate proficiency at level 103 in all foreign language either by satisfactorily completing course work or by examination.

If you choose the traditional foreign language and have no particular preference, we recommend Spanish. It is the second most spoken language in the U.S. and is especially useful for social workers.
