REQUIRED SOCIAL WORK COURSES
Below is the Wright State Undergraduate catalog
description of the required Social Work courses in the major. A grade of
"C" or higher is required in all Social Work courses including SW 491
or the following accepted inferential statistics courses: STT 265, MS 202,
or PLS 211.

270-4 Social Work as a Profession
Introduction to the profession: historical
development, value base, social systems perspective on social
problems, and major fields of practice. Includes required knowledge,
skills, and values; critical thinking; problem solving;
self-awareness; and appreciation of racial, ethnic, and cultural
pluralism. SW 270 is offered in the Fall and Winter.

291 Descriptive Statistics (4credit hours)
Discusses descriptive statistical methods for
social science research. Includes theory and application of frequency
distributions, graphic representations, measures of central tendency
and variability, Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Introduces
probability and measures of association. Prerequisite: MTH 102 or DEV
095.

Social Work 375, 380
and 490 are the first Social Work courses in the major. They must be
completed before a student begins the practicum, SW 487, and can only
be taken after admission to the major. They are offered Spring and
Fall quarters.

375-4 Human Behavior in Social Functioning
Analysis of human behavior in assessment of
social functioning as it relates to social work intervention. Includes
ego psychology, social systems theory, with an emphasis on
understanding diversity. Prerequisite: SW 270, SW 271 and SW 272.

380-4 Basic Practice Theory
Foundation sequence of generalist social work
practice theory. Problem assessment, data collecting, data analysis,
intervention methods, and evaluation procedures. Introduction to
task-centered approach. Prerequisite: SW 270 , SW 271 and SW 272.

490-4 Research Methods in Social Work
Sequential study of evaluative research design
methodology. Development of criteria for the selection and intelligent
use of research reports. Evaluation of selected research reports for
relevance to social work practice. Prerequisite: SW 271 and SW 272. The remaining 400
level social work courses are taken concurrently with the practicum,
SW 487, SW 488 and SW 489. SW 481 must be taken concurrently with
the 1st quarter of practicum.

SW 481-4 Generalist Practice with Individuals
In-depth study of generalist social work
practice theory for the enhancement of social functioning of
individuals. Offered Fall and Winter. Prerequisite: SW 375, 380 and
490.

SW 483-4 Generalist Practice with Families
In-depth study of generalist social work
practice theory for the enhancement of family social functioning.
Offered Winter and Spring. Prerequisite: SW 375, 380 and 490.

SW 482-4 Generalist Practice with Groups
In-depth study of generalist social work
practice for enhancement of social functioning of small groups.

Communities
In-depth study of generalist social work practice
for enhancement of social functioning of small groups. Offered Fall

- SW 491-4 Research Methods in Social Work II
Continuation of SW 490 with the emphasis of
applying inferential statistics during Social Work Research.

- SW 470-4 Social Welfare Policy
Development, status, and effectiveness of social
work values and knowledge to current policies, programs, and services.
Offered Winter and Spring. Prerequisite: SW 375,380 and 490.
- SW 487, 488, 489-4 to 12 Field Practicum I, II, and
III
Application of theory to practice in agency
settings. Individual supervised learning experiences and on-site
seminars under direction of instructor and agency staff. Prerequisite:
SW 375, 380 and 490; SW 481 concurrent with SW 487. Begins Fall or
Winter quarters.
