Acceptance into the major
is no guarantee of permission to remain in it. At any time during
enrollment in the program, a student may be denied major status
and starting of the practicum. The major standards which govern
such decisions include the NASW Code of Ethics, instructors'
evaluation of performance in class learning, supervisors' evaluations
of students in field settings, and the WSU Student Code of Conduct.
Behaviors
that can lead to the dismissal from the major are cited under
- Conduct Policies: Code of Student Conduct (WSU Student Handbook).
Some examples are:
- Distribution of drugs or narcotics-any means by which a
student makes illegal drugs/narcotics available to another
person. (WSU Student Handbook)
- Psychological instability that may pose danger to that student or
others, or may interfere with the normal functioning of the
university and/or practicum agency.
- Cheating on exams
- Falsification of the practicum agency records
- Breach of agency confidentiality rules
Any Departmental faculty member can initiate an
action to discontinue a student's enrollment in the major. Prior to any
official action, the faculty member will provide the student an
opportunity to be heard by meeting with the student to discuss the
concerns/behaviors that may lead to action to discontinue said
student's enrollment in the major. Next, the entire faculty will
convene to make a decision about such an action. The Department Chair
will inform the student in writing of the faculty's decision and why
the action was taken.
A student may appeal this action by requesting a
review hearing. The student must submit a written request to the
Department Chair within ten working days of the notice. The hearing
will be conducted at the earliest convenience of faculty and student,
not to exceed twenty working days from the student's written request
for a hearing. The student will be notified by the Department Chair
five working days before the scheduled hearing. This process will
involve all social work faculty members as well as the student under
review. The student may be accompanied by an advocate and may invite up
to two other persons to speak on his/her behalf. No action terminating
the student from the program will be taken during the time the
student's appeal is pending. The decision to deny continuation in the
program must be upheld by at least a three-quarters majority of social
work faculty members. If such a majority is not obtained, the original
decision to deny continuation is voided. The faculty decision may be
finally appealed by the student to the Dean of the College.
Having an overall G.P.A. below a 2.00 for two consecutive
quarters may also lead to dismissal from the major and the university.
