David A. Petreman was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin in 1948. He was educated at Illinois Wesleyan University (B.A.) and the University of Iowa (M.A. and Ph.D.). He has taught at Wright State University for 24 years. His specialties are the Spanish Language, Latin American Literature and Latin American Culture. Both his research and much of his creative work focuses on Chile and Chilean literature. He has published eight books, including a critical study, three translations and four creative works. Other publications include numerous articles on Chilean literature and on baseball. His poetry can be found in many U.S. and Canadian literary journals. Petreman initiated the process to bring USAC (University Studies Abroad Consortium) to Wright State. He won the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1993, and recently won the Paul Laurence Dunbar Poetry Prize for 2013. He has traveled extensively, including ten trips to Chile (two of those were nearly year-long stays), two trips to Mexico and three trips to Spain, as well as visits to Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, France and Italy. Petreman is married to Julie Anderson, a local painter and painting instructor at Stivers School for the Arts. His passions include teaching, writing, everything Chilean, travel, baseball, fishing in the northern woods of Wisconsin, the Iowa Hawkeyes, music by the Beatles, Santana, Neil Young, Los Lonely Boys and Latin American folkloric music.
