Professor Buckwalter’s first encounter with Spanish was in her freshman year of high school. She studied the language for four years and excelled at it. In college, she enrolled in a 300-level Spanish class, even though her intended major was engineering. After one semester, she realized her real passion was Spanish, so she switched majors. While at Ohio Northern University, she had the opportunity to improve her language and teaching skills, serving as Spanish tutor as well as student teacher for 100 and 200 level Spanish classes. The summer after her junior year, she traveled to Mexico to live for a month with a family. While there, her language caught fire and her passion for the culture grew. She traveled twice to Spain before graduating in spring 1998. The following fall she enrolled in the Master’s program at Bowling Green State University where she spent her first year living in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, and her second year taking classes and teaching Spanish on BGSU’s campus.
She joined the faculty of Wright State University in 2002 as an adjunct of Spanish and has since been promoted to Lecturer II. Since 2005 she has also served as Assistant Director of Development for the College of Liberal Arts. In this administrative role, she directs initiatives to engage with college alumni and donors. She also manages the University's premier arts fundraiser, ArtsGala, which has raised over $1.3 million in fine and performing arts scholarships since 2000.
Professor Buckwalter stays active in the department of Modern Languages as well by teaching 2-3 courses per year and getting involved in activities such as Spanish Immersion Day. She and her colleague, Michelle Cipriano, are organizing a May 2013 study abroad trip to Spain for WSU students. Professor Buckwalter is also a member of the Ohio Foreign Language Association and presents at their annual conference each spring.
In her free time, Professor Buckwalter enjoys traveling, reading, Latin dancing, soccer, and home improvement projects. She also loves studying other languages and has taken several courses in French and Chinese.
