Creative Genius: Inventions with Impact

2008 Student Exhibit

National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center

Q: What do a traffic signal, an ironing board, and a cookie cutter have in common?

A: They were all invented by African American inventors!

In cooperation with the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center in Wilberforce, Ohio, and the Ohio Historical Society, Wright State University Public History Students are presenting their exhibit on African American inventors and the ways their inventions have changed our lives.  The opening reception took place on Sunday, June 8, 2008, from 1pm to 3pm.  The reception was open to the public and included refreshments, children's activities, and a performance by the Paul Laurence Dunbar Chorale.

The exhibit will remain open at the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center until August 2, 2008.  Plan to visit and support your fellow Public History students!

WSU Hosts Ohio Academy of History's Annual Meeting

On April 11-12, 2008, Wright State University hosted the Ohio Academy of History's Annual Meeting.  At the meeting, Ohio historians, including professors and students, presented their work in 90-minute panels of related topics.  Some of the topics covered were: Islam and Nationalism in the Middle East, The History of Antioch College, Testing the Limits: Religion and Politics in 18th- and 19th-century America, and Anglo-American Women's History.  Several Wright State University history professors were involved in planning the conference, and several either presented their research or served as panel moderators.  Public History student Andrea Green presented her paper, "Best Dressed: Women's Fashion and the Consumer Revolution in England and America, 1750-1800," and alumna Lorrie Monteiro's paper, "Out of the Shadows and Into the Skies: Women Aviators of the 1930s," was presented by Wittenberg professor Tammy Proctor.  Both were a part of the Anglo-American Women's History panel.
