Program Overview: Early Evaluation

To obtain a preliminary assessment of your writing, your instructor may schedule an early, ungraded writing assignment. If your instructor feels you may need additional assistance, you may be referred to the University Writing Center or other appropriate services.

Program Overview: Developmental Courses

Some students may require a few courses before taking ENG 101 to develop the skills necessary to benefit fully from the class. One or more courses may be required if your writing placement examination shows they would be beneficial. The WSU undergraduate catalog lists the courses available as

  • Basic Writing Skills II (DEV 082; 6 quarter hours)

Provides learning activities enabling students to brainstorm for ideas; develop and organize their writing; revise; edit for grammar, sentence structure, and mechanics; and prepare standard, acceptable final drafts of their writing.

Grades are pass/unsatisfactory.

  • Fundamental English Skills (DEV 092; 4 quarter hours)

Prepares students for success in ENG 101 by giving them instruction and activities in the fundamentals of the writing process. Grades are pass/unsatisfactory.
