Course & Portfolio Requirements for an M.A. in TESOL

(Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)

  1. CORE COURSES (8 hours)
    ENG 700 -- Methods and Materials of Research in Writing and Language
    ENG 714 -- Discourse Analysis


  2. 700-LEVEL COURSES (20 hours)
    ENG 770 -- TESOL Listening and Speaking
    ENG 780 -- TESOL Reading and Writing

    Three additional 700-level courses in Writing and Language, at least one of which must be a seminar (prerequisite for all seminars is ENG 700 or 701)

  3. Option in TESOL (28 hours)
    Prerequisite for the option: ENG 478/678-4 Introduction to Linguistics (or equivalent)
    All of the following courses (20 hours)
    • ENG 681-4 Theory of ESL
    • ENG 682-4 TESOL Grammar
    • ENG 687-4 TESOL Assessment (spring)

      either
    • ENG 683-4 Sociolinguistics
    • ENG 684-4 TESOL Practices and Materials

      or
    • ENG 683-4 TEFL Theory and Culture
    • ENG 684-4 TEFL Practices and Materials

      and
    • ED 660-4 or ED 658-4 Practicum

      NOTE:
    • In order to be admitted into the program, nonnative speakers of English must obtain a TOEFL score of IBT 100/CBT 250/PBT 600, or for conditional admission 80/213/550.
  4. TESOL Portfolio Requirement
Students may also combine work on Graduate Endorsement in TESOL with an M.A. in English.
