M.A. in TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

Course & Portfolio Requirements

The M.A. in TESOL provides training in language theory, pedagogy, and applied linguistics, with the opportunity to combine this knowledge with the basic skills necessary to teach writing. The TESOL endorsement (added to licensure in the state of Ohio) may be done within the TESOL M.A.

  1. Co-requisites

    1. For all candidates: ▪ ENG 4710 or 6710 Introduction to Linguistics or the equivalent (should be taken prior to or at the beginning of the program)
    2. For the endorsement: See the Director of TESOL for program details .
  2. Admission Requirements 

    1. Department Requirements for TESOL: A GPA of 3.2 in any undergraduate degree with strong evidence of excellence in language skills.
    2. Regular Admission: Overall GPA of 3.0 or better in undergraduate course work or an overall undergraduate GPA of 2.7, but with a 3.3 or better for the last 93 quarter hours (60 semester hours) earned toward the undergraduate degree.
    3. Conditional Admission: Overall GPA of 2.7 or better in undergraduate course work or an overall undergraduate GPA of 2.5, but with a 3.0 or better for the last 93 quarter hours (60 semester hours) earned toward the undergraduate degree.
    4. A paper using secondary sources (5 page minimum) written on a topic in literature, writing, language, linguistics or education or a related field. This may be a paper previously handed in for an undergraduate class.
    5. Nonnative speakers of English: In order to be admitted into the program nonnative speakers of English must obtain a TOEFL score of IBT 100/CBT 250/PBT 600 or IELTS 7.5, TSE-A 68 or for conditional admission, TOEFL score of 80/213/550, IELTS 6.5, or TSE-A 53. Students will be tested upon beginning the program and may be required to take ESL courses to improve their English skills.
    6. Transfer of Credit: The Language Programs Committee must approve all transfer of credit prior to the student's acceptance into the program.

* - For students who qualify, several options on and off campus exist for the internship, including a six month internship in Japan.

    1. Portfolio

      Before graduating, a candidate for the master's degree in TESOL must present a portfolio of work for evaluation.
