WSU English major Lara Donnelly was selected to present her fiction at the

International Conference for the Fantastic in the Arts, held in Orlando, Florida, from March 18-22, 2009. Lara attended the conference after her story “The Noisome Trousers” won Honorable Mention in the Dell Magazines Award for Undergraduate Excellence in Science Fiction and Fantasy Writing.  Lara's trip to the conference was, in part,

sponsored by The English Club and the Department of English Founder's Fund.

In June, some editors of The Fogdog Review, most of whom are also in English Club, enjoyed high tea at Central Perc, in Oakwood. They celebrated a successful year for Fogdog and EC, and also said goodbye to June graduates,

Brandy and Sara.

The English Club held a Coffeehouse Reading on May 27, 2005. Winners of the Creative Writing Contest read from their work, followed by an open mic & original music by Jess Haney.

The English Club / EGO (English Graduate Organization) Spring Book Sale was held in May 11, 2005.

In April 2005, English Club students joined Drs. Jones, Pringle, and Sharma for the film Bride and Prejudice, at the Little Art Theatre in Yellow Springs. After the movie, Dr. Sharma discussed the Bollywood film over dinner at Jeet Indian Restaurant.

In February 2005 the English Club sold over 120 handmade Literary Valentines.

The English Club Bibliophiles--a group of students who love to read and to talk about books without professors and exams on the periphery--met to discuss The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde, in October 2004.  The English Club / E.G.O. Fall Book Sale also was held in October 2004.

EC dinner with Neil O'SheaIn September 2004, The English Club and friends dined with actor Neil O'Shea, at Jeet Indian Restaurant, during his week-long visit to Wright State. Neil O'Shea (first on the left) performed his acclaimed one-man show, "The Irish Writers Entertain," the following evening.
 
Wild Wilde Nights PresentationFrom left: Katharine Nelson (EC co-President), Dr. Joe Law, and Dr. Mary Beth Pringle (EC co-advisor), before the presentation of the 2002 film version of The Importance of Being Earnest. Dr. Law's discussion of the film was the second of two events in the English Club's "Wild Wilde Nights" September 2004 celebration of the art of Oscar Wilde. The first event was a talk given by Dr. Law: " 'I Put All My Genius into My Life': Oscar Wilde & the Artistic Life." Dr. Law's talk inspired the English Club Bibliophiles to read Wilde's novel The Picture of Dorian Gray

 

In August 2004, English Club members Brandy Foster (co-President) and Danielle Roach along with faculty advisors Drs. Pringle and Oxindine read stories to children at the Barnes and Noble in Beavercreek. Among the children pictured are Brandy's children, William and Elizabeth; Danielle's son, Joshua; and Christine Reedy's son, Owen.

And in a wonderful turn of events, the children read to us . . .
