A Reading List for Children
These books were selected for literary and artistic merit,
for positive contributions to the literary background of children ages
4 through 12, for examples of the work of significant authors and illustrators,
and for value as memorable and enjoyable family reading. Reading levels
are arbitrarily noted as P (Primary) for readers aged 4 through
8 and I (Intermediate) for readers aged 9 through 12. Many books
could be used at both levels. The three divisions of the children's list
follow the pattern of the adult list.
We have added a list of the winners of the prestigious NEWBERY MEDAL
for the best work of children's literature and the CALDECOTT
MEDAL for the best illustrated book for children. Many of these
books have become classics and are listed on one of our other lists.
