GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN TESOL

(Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)

The TESOL Program acquaints students with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to teach English as a second or foreign language. The Graduate Certificate in TESOL is open to any qualified Wright State graduate student, regardless of program. It is available to nondegree students and to students in the English M.A. program in Literature or in Composition and Rhetoric, as well as the Master of Humanities program. The requirements for this certificate are

• ENG 684 TESOL Practices and Materials (4 hrs.) Offered in winter
• ENG 682 TESOL Grammar (4 hrs.) Offered in winter
• ENG 683 Sociolinguistics (4 hrs.) Offered in spring
• ENG 687 TESOL Assessment (4 hrs.) Varies
• ED 660 Practicum (2 hrs.) Varies

• A grade of B or better in an upper-division introductory linguistics course taken within the last five years is the only prerequisite to the certificate program. Students may fulfill this requirement by taking either ENG 478 or ENG 678 (Introduction to Linguistics) before beginning the certificate program or during the fall quarter in conjunction with fall quarter courses.
• In order to be admitted into the program, nonnative speakers of English must obtain a TOEFL score of 250 (600), or for conditional admission 213 (550). Students will be tested upon beginning the program and may be required to take ESL courses to improve their English skills.
• Students must take a minimum of fourteen hours at Wright State University. The Language Programs Committee must approve all transfer of credit prior to the student's acceptance into the program.
• Several options on and off campus exist for the practicum, including a six-month internship in Japan for students who qualify.
• In order to receive the certificate, a student must earn a 3.0 average for the courses in the program.

The exit portfolio is a comprehensive evaluation of the student's knowledge of TESOL subject matter. Students must submit the portfolio after completing the course sequence.
