“I am a huge advocate for the Wright State American Humanics Student Association, which is a nonprofit leadership certification program nationally recognized. Through this association, I found three paid internships that provided me with substantial work experience and also helped my communities. These internships have provided me many leadership, public speaking, networking, and unique skill training opportunities.”
Leadership: I am the Secretary and Marketing Communications chair for the Wright State American Humanics Student Association
Most valuable experience: The opportunity and encouragement to participate in internships has allowed me to connect classes to real life experiences, as well as learn about myself. I like that the College of Business provides course credit for internships. It made me value my major and what I was learning.
Career Plans: I plan to continue to find internships to further help me define what I want to do and to gain more experience in my field. Marketing is a very broad career and I don’t want to close out any opportunities.
Why WSU? I enjoy the idea of being the liaison between companies and organizations and to the community and public at large. I hope to work for a non-profit that will allow me to better communicate what they have to offer to the community. Marketing is very adaptable to many different types of careers and I like the idea that I can mold my own position and skills.
Tips for Success:
- I would definitely recommend getting involved in the local community or student organizations. Don't hesitate to take on leadership positions. This will not only help with building resumes, but character.
- Don’t dismiss internship opportunities. I was terrified to do my first one because the job description seemed over my head. It’s important to understand that internships are there to allow the students to learn. You are allowed to make mistakes. That’s the point of an internship to make mistakes and learn from them. I also did one job shadow and it opened my eyes to so many different types of jobs that I never heard of. Taking proactive steps to gain experience and knowledge of the outside world can really help you in the future.
- Also, professors are really great resources of not only information but for networking. I wish I would have taken advantage of this earlier. They are really there to help you. Now that I’m about to finish school, my teachers are still willing to help me with my first job after graduation. Professors can be a lot different during office hours especially if you display a little hard work.
