MIS Student receives CIOhio Symposium State-wide Scholarship

Grant Orians, a Management Information Systems major at the Raj Soin College of Business has been awarded a $2,000 CIOhio Symposium Scholarship. Starting his third year at the college, Grant demonstrated his leadership talents in his has role as MIS Club president and numerous other campus activities. Three CIOhio Symposium Scholarships are awarded yearly through the CIOhio Program Committee, based on academic achievement, extracurricular involvement and leadership potential. Grant’s achievement was recognized at the CIOhio Symposium, the premier event for CIOs and other business leaders across Ohio.
“When I first found out about the CIOhio Symposium Scholarship, I felt that I stood a chance to win it due to my involvement with several organizations on campus. As I began to gather the necessary recommendation letters, I discovered just how much of an impact I made on other individuals through the work I did as President of the MIS Club. It was very humbling to hear other individuals praise the work that I had done,” said Orians.
“As a recipient of the 2008 CIOhio Symposium Scholarship, I experienced a unique opportunity to attend the 2008 CIOhio Symposium in Columbus, Ohio. This was a CIO (Chief Information Officer) invitation-only event and I was one of a select few students to be invited. I met and talked with several CIO’s from businesses throughout Ohio. It was a very entertaining experience and I learned a lot as well. I gained knowledge about the current Information Technology (IT) problems these CIO’s are dealing with and the trends that will affect the IT industry in the future. Overall, it was definitely an eye-opening experience that would have never happened had I not taken a few minutes of my time to fill out an application,” said Orians.

WSU Business Information Systems Program First in Ohio to Be Accredited By The Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET
October 4, 2006
The Bachelor of Science program in management information systems (MIS) at Wright State University’s Raj Soin College of Business has received national accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
The college becomes the first Ohio business school and one of a handful in the nation to receive accreditation from the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET for the information systems program. The Raj Soin College of Business is also the first in the region to be accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
Berkwood Farmer, Ph.D., dean of the school, said, “We are excited to receive this accreditation that is a testimony to the excellence of our program, faculty and students in management information systems.” He said the accreditation will help MIS graduates when they enter the job market, make local, regional and global employers aware of the excellence of the MIS program at Wright State and assure the parents of students in the program that their investment in a college education at Wright State constitutes an excellent return on investment.
ABET is the recognized accreditor of college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering and technology. The accreditation from volunteer professionals in industry, government, academe, and private practice focuses on the MIS curriculum, faculty, facilities and institutional support.
A key element in the accreditation process is a requirement that the programs continually improve their quality. “Our commitment to continual improvement is demonstrated through self-evaluation, measuring student success and receiving input from corporate and industry advisory boards,” Farmer said.
ABET is an internationally respected organization with some 1,500 volunteers that has provided leadership in higher education for more than 70 years.
The MIS program at Wright State prepares students for careers in systems analysis, business system design and information technology development. The program includes course work in information system design and development methodologies, database management systems, electronic business and data communications. The program also covers business fundamentals in accounting, finance, marketing, management and management science.
The Wright State University College of Engineering and Computer Science also has earned reaccreditation from the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET for all eight of its undergraduate degrees.
Operations Management Seniors Assist Computer Science Corporation (CSC) with Nationwide Rollout.
Three senior Operations Management majors worked with Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) for their capstone project in MS 495. Chad Wynkoop, Jeff Boeckman, and Jerry Pfister worked with Brian Welch, Curt Driggers and other CSC staff to determine the requirements for scheduling the rollout of the ECSS (Expeditionary Combat Support System) to 100 locations including 297 air force bases between 2010 and 2012. ISOM Corporate Advisory Board member Aaron Sigritz arranged for the outstanding learning opportunity for the Operation Management students. The Wright State team was responsible for building a black box tool, CSC Deployment Planning Strategy Tool, to assist in prioritizing and sequencing the deployment of the ECSS application to over 100 locations across the world. They developed the tool using Excel and Visual Basic. After testing and documenting, the project was presented to CSC representatives on March 12.
