Accounting Students - Case Competition Finals at IMA Conference

Wright State accounting students placed in the final four for the fourteenth time at the 2011 Institute for Management Accountants (IMA) national competition. 2009-2010: Accounting students qualify for unprecedented thirteenth time in National Case Competition Finals

Wright State celebrated its thirteenth final four placing case competition team at the annual IMA Conference in Baltimore, Maryland. This year’s team consisted of Karla Kober and Jeff Szkody (Master’s of Accountancy), Kate Lash and Candice Stetler (seniors, Accountancy and Finance), Corey Pennington (junior, Accountancy and Finance), and Dr. Dave Bukovinsky, faculty advisor. The case centered on Keenan’s Irish pub, and the students developed suggestions to increase the operational effectiveness and profitability of the pub which was located in a languishing economy.

Wright State has an unprecedented history in this competition and its teams are able to go beyond the classroom to enhance problem –solving and presentation skills.   Aside from competing, attending the conference was an excellent opportunity to network with CMAs, learn about careers, and become more involved with the IMA as students members.   As always, the Dayton Chapter was very accommodating. Even though the Raiders did not come home with a first place finish, going to the conference was a terrific experience for everyone involved.

Once again, Wright State University managed to have a team reach the finals of the Student Case Competition held during the National Conference in Denver. The team members this year were Emily Parker, Kate Lash, Jeff Szkody, Jeremy VanNess and Stephanie Jergens. The mantle as director has been transferred from Dr. John Talbott to Maggie Houston, professor of Accountancy. To compete at the conference, the team made a live presentation to a panel of four judges and then provided a response to the judges' question as the Mutant Ninja Turtles.

2008: Accounting Students Qualify for Final Four in National Case Competition Finals

Five students from Wright State's Raj Soin College of Business continued the Department of Accountancy's national reputation for excellence by being selected for the 2008 Institute of Management Accountants (IMS) case competition.  The 2008 team consisting of Diana Dafler, Stephanie Jergens, Rocco Latino, Michael Pabst and William Ryan was one of only four teams selected from a field of top colleges in the nation invited to attend the IMA's Annual Conference in Tampa, Florida.

The students took a creative approach to this year's challenge by presenting their strategic recommendations as “the A-Team" in the video which qualified them for the final four.  According to John Talbott, Ph.D., a professor of accountancy and mentor to the team, the students were challenged to evaluate, interpret and synthesize strategic  accounting recommendations for a non-profit health-related organization that was facing rapid growth.

2007: Accountancy Students Set Record in National Case Competition

For an historic third time in four years, Wright State University accountancy students qualified two teams for the recent national finals of student case competition sponsored by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA).

The Raj Soin College of Business students constitute the only team in the history of the competition to ever have two teams among the four finalists on three occasions. For their efforts this year the team received $6,000 in cash awards that will be used to support future Wright State student competition in the IMA event.
